FIELD NOTE / PRACTICAL GUIDE

AI for a small business: choose a useful first project

Compare content, customer support, operations and research projects using available inputs, review effort and a measurable business task.

Start with a task you already pay for in time or money. Select work where you have reliable inputs and can judge the output. The examples here are possible projects, not forecasts of savings or sales.

Content and customer information

Turn an approved interview into a small content plan, or organise repeated customer questions into an FAQ. Bring real product details, policies and a person who can approve the text. Measure the time to an approved result and whether customers can find the information they need.

Operations and knowledge

Document one recurring process from an interview and a real example. Include the trigger, inputs, decision rules and handover. Ask another team member to follow it. A clear procedure is also a useful foundation before adding automation.

Research and decisions

Build a comparison table from sources you can open and inspect. Separate seller claims, customer evidence and your assumptions. For a UAE business using English and Arabic, name the audience, choose approved terminology and include a language review of the final material.

Scope a paid pilot

Agree on one deliverable, required inputs, reviewer, deadline and acceptance criteria. Track every hour and direct expense. Judge the result against a baseline rather than promising a percentage improvement in advance. Expand only after the output is useful and the process is repeatable.

Keep this checklist

  • Existing task with a clear owner
  • Reliable source inputs
  • Review time budgeted
  • Pilot outcome measured
